Vigil/No Vigil
Last June there was a horrific shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. 49 people were killed, and 53 more injured. The story dominated news headlines for days. Locally, there were at least two (maybe three?) vigils. All were well-attended.
In January there was a horrific shooting at a Quebec City mosque. Six people died and 19 were injured. The story dominated news headlines for days. Locally, there was a big vigil.
Last week there was a horrific attack in London, when a driver intentionally hit pedestrians on a bridge. Four people were killed and 40 were injured. The story dominated news headlines for days. If there was a vigil, I did not hear about it.
I am not claiming that every horrific event that dominates the news requires a vigil. But isn't it interesting which events we commemmorate and which we don't?
